When honesty becomes uncomfortable

When honesty becomes uncomfortable

Compared to the song “Like A Drug”, which leans more into dark and dramatic vibes, we wanted “Truth Teller” to feel different on purpose. More groove, more movement and a stronger focus on the technical side that also defines Torrential Rain. It is not a break from what we usually do, but rather a conscious change in perspective that belongs to us just as much as our dramatic side.

Lyrically, the song deals with a situation most people have probably experienced at some point. It’s about those moments where you speak up and say something honest, not to hurt someone, but because it needs to be said. Whether it’s friends or family, you try to address something uncomfortable and suddenly you find yourself in a difficult role. “Truth Teller” is about that exact tension: wanting to help someone by being honest while realizing that the truth isn’t always something people are ready to hear. Honesty doesn’t automatically lead to understanding. Sometimes it causes the exact opposite.

The songwriting process for this track was actually pretty quick. While some songs take weeks or even months to fully come together, “Truth Teller” was written and finished within one to two weeks. For us, especially considering how detailed and complex the song is, that’s almost high speed. Still, or maybe because of that, there’s a lot going on under the surface. Many small details only really stand out after listening multiple times. If you’re into modern metalcore that offers more than just pop with shouts and heavy guitars, this one is definitely for you.

Musically, it is exactly that balance that makes the song special for us. On one side, you have technical riffs, complex rhythms and heavy sections that we love. On the other side, there are parts that immediately stick with you and make you want to sing along. The chorus is probably the best example. It’s catchy, straight to the point and built in a way that stays in your head after just one listen. For us, it’s definitely one of the strongest choruses we’ve written so far.

From a technical perspective, we gave ourselves a small upgrade with “Truth Teller. For the first time, we’re using drop E tuning, which gives the song its own kind of depth and heaviness. At the same time, it also makes everything more challenging. Playing tight and clean on an 8-string with riffs and rhythms like these is definitely not easy. Guitar nerds will know exactly what we mean! But that’s also what made the whole process exciting and pushed the song even further.

In the end, “Truth Teller” is one of those songs you just want to play all the way through, turn it up in the car and let it run without skipping. It’s built to keep your head moving from start to finish without even thinking about it. That was exactly the idea.

The music video was produced at the same time and location as “Like A Drug”. The setting worked so well with the vibe of the song that we knew we wanted to use it again. Even though it’s the same place, “Truth Teller” brings a completely different energy into it. The visuals stay familiar, but the feeling changes, which actually reflects the whole idea behind this song.

With “Truth Teller” we’re not just showing a different musical side of us but also talking about something that’s probably closer to real life than most people would admit.
